Description
Variations on popular operatic themes were extremely fashionable in the late 18th century. Even the young Beethoven composed several acclaimed sets of Variations for Cello and Piano, based on themes from Mozart's "The Magic Flute" and Handel's "Judas Maccabaeus." The widespread publication and performance of these works at the time suggests they were highly popular from the outset, as revealed in the Beethoven Complete Edition's critical report.
