A collection of eight Thomas Hardy ballads and songs with lyrics for piano and high voice. Two more Hardy settings, If it's ever Spring again and The Children and Sir Nameless, were first published in this edition of the Winter Words score. Both were originally meant to be included in the cycle but were eventually rejected when the final version of the work was completed
