Description

The Cantata "Rejoice in the Lamb" draws its text from a lengthy poem of the same name, authored by Christopher Smart, an 18th-century poet known for his deep religious convictions and his troubled mind. Composed during his time in an asylum, the poem exhibits a chaotic structure yet reveals moments of remarkable brilliance. Benjamin Britten selected several of these exquisite passages to create the musical setting. Central to both the poem and the Cantata is the theme of divine worship, expressed by all of creation in its unique manner. The Cantata consists of ten brief sections, beginning with the introduction of the theme, followed by examples from the Old Testament where various figures are called to join nature in praising God. Subsequent sections include a serene Hallelujah, reflections on Smart's beloved cat and a mouse as embodiments of nature's praise, and a celebration of flowers as "the poetry of Christ." The narrative also touches on Smart's personal struggles, which he views as opportunities for glorifying God through Christ. The penultimate section features four letters from an alphabet, culminating in a full chorus that highlights the role of musical instruments in worship, before concluding with a repeated Hallelujah.
