Description

In the early 1870s, Saint-Saëns developed a particular affinity for the cello. In December 1872, shortly after completing his first cello concerto (see HN 711), he composed his first cello sonata. This sonata strongly evokes Beethoven, not only in its key of C minor, but also in its gripping dramatic character.

The exceptional status of this technically demanding and at times highly virtuosic sonata was quickly recognized by the public and critics, leading to its swift inclusion in the concert repertoire. Our Urtext edition incorporates all extant sources - a first. Pianist Pascal Rogé and cellist David Geringas kindly provided their performance markings for the piano and cello parts.
