Description
Chopin's mazurkas represent the third major dance form he cultivated, after the polonaises and waltzes. This genre constitutes the largest of Chopin's three dance-based groups, with nearly 60 individual pieces. Chopin embraced the mazurka throughout his creative life, from childhood until his final years, reflecting not only his patriotic love for his native Poland, but also his deep understanding of the Polish national psyche. Drawing inspiration from the diverse regional mazurka styles found across the country, Chopin sublimated these folk influences into absolute music of the highest elegance, refined harmonies, and rhythmic power.
