Description
Schumann's "Orchestral Etudes" were composed against a backdrop of a secret engagement, a composer father-in-law, and rival publishing houses. In 1837, Schumann's youthful and passionate love for Ernestine von Fricken inspired him to write "intensely emotional variations" on a theme by her father. Years later, in 1852, Schumann authorized a new edition containing significant changes. Our revised issue includes both versions, with prefaces and extensive commentary from editor Ernst Herttrich.
