Bohm: 4 Pieces (Violin/Piano)
G. Henle Verlag

Bohm: 4 Pieces (Violin/Piano)

Author : Carl Bohm

Description

His “Perpetuo mobile” is well-known to many violinists: Carl Bohm (1844–1920) was one of the most popular masters of German salon music, and in the late nineteenth century his catchy melodies enraptured audiences in middle-class living rooms as well as in large concert halls. The trained pianist composed over 300 works, including numerous pieces for violin and piano that are well worth discovering! This edition brings together the “Perpetuo mobile” with three other virtuoso miniatures, which serve equally well as effective concert pieces and as demanding teaching material. They sharpen precision in rhythm and articulation, and at the same time provide scope for expression, virtuosity and lively ensemble playing – today just as a hundred years ago!

Brahms: 21 Hungarian Dances, WoO1 (Violin/Piano)

Author : Johannes Brahms

Description

“What one has so long and so boisterously merely played, is awkward to write down.” With this charming self-irony, Johannes Brahms described the lively origins of his Hungarian Dances, whose rousing rhythms and fiery melodies continue to captivate to this day. Brahms’s friend, the violinist Joseph Joachim, made a congenial arrangement for violin and piano which combines consummate virtuosity with the magic of chamber music. Our edition follows the first edition published by Simrock and compares it with the original version for piano four-hands. For the first time, it offers all the dances of this arrangement together in one volume – a musical homage to the close friendship between two exceptional artists and to the eternal power of Hungarian tone colour.

The Hungarian Dance no. 4 fascinates with the contrast between the elegiac melody of its main theme and the folkloristic-inspired virtuoso interludes. Joachim transferred both to his instrument in true “devil violinist” style. This dance, internationally acclaimed as a concert piece in its own right, is now available as a single edition.

Falla.Kochanski: Suite Populaire Espagnole (Violin/Piano)

Falla.Kochanski: Suite Populaire Espagnole (Violin/Piano)

Author : Manuel de Falla, Paul Kochanski

Description

The “Suite populaire espagnole” by violin virtuoso Paul Kochanski combines characteristic Spanish rhythms with the finest chamber music elegance. The basis is Falla’s song cycle “Siete canciones populares españolas” from 1914 – a masterpiece between folk art and art music, which blends folkloristic timbres with impressionistic harmonies. Paul Kochanski’s dazzling arrangement from 1926 plays with violin techniques such as pizzicato to evoke the castanets in “Jota” or muted strings in “Asturiana”. The Henle edition offers clear musical notation and is the ideal starting point for a performance of these Spanish impressions.

Hubay: Carmen, Fantaisie brillante, Op.3 Nr.3 (Violin/Piano)

Author : Jeno Hubay

Description

It does not always have to be Sarasate – the “Carmen Fantasy” by Hungarian violin virtuoso Jenő Hubay is also well worth discovering! Composed in 1876/77, it is considered an early example of his masterful operatic transcriptions. Hubay combined the best-known themes from Georges Bizet’s opera – Habanera, Micaëla’s aria, the Toreador March – into a colourful showpiece for the violin. Dedicated to violin virtuoso Henri Vieuxtemps, the work bears testimony to Hubay’s lyrical expressive power as well as his complete mastery of demanding violin technique. Massenet: Meditation (from "Thais") Violin/Piano

Author : Jules Massenet

Description

Jules Massenet is considered one of the great masters of French opera. Thanks to its emotional expressiveness, the famous “Méditation” from his opera “Thaïs” (1894) remains one of the most popular works in the violin repertoire and has appeared in numerous arrangements. This version for violin and piano was made by Martin Pierre Marsick (1847–1924), who, like Massenet, was a professor at the Conservatoire in Paris. In this still popular arrangement, the orchestral accompaniment is skilfully transcribed for the piano. With a fine sense of sound and balance, it allows for an interpretation that is both intimate and compelling – ideal for teaching, study and performance. This edition is based on the first edition published by Heugel & Cie. Paris in 1894. The Henle edition offers a reliable version of the text which is faithful to the original.
