John Field, a pupil of Muzio Clementi, was renowned in his day as a celebrated pianist, credited with near-legendary skill. The Irish piano virtuoso and composer is principally known for his "Nocturnes," a genre later adopted by Chopin; yet his four piano sonatas in this volume also deserve the highest respect. Since no autographs of the sonatas survive, this Henle Urtext edition has consulted all the important prints issued during Field's lifetime as its primary source. Copies with extensive handwritten annotations by the composer have served as the editorial team's main reference. Editor Robin Langley's preface provides valuable information about the sources of the sonatas, addresses questions concerning rhythmic execution, and places Field's work in the historical context of piano music of his era, making this edition especially valuable.
This exceptional volume compiles all 38 of Joplin's piano rags into a single, meticulously produced edition. It also features his six collaborative works, in addition to Joplin's own instructional guide on playing ragtime, titled the School of Ragtime. Each rag is reproduced alongside its original sheet music cover from the publisher's first edition.
Scott Joplin, recognized as the preeminent "King of Ragtime Writers," created numerous beloved compositions that define the ragtime genre. His repertoire encompasses not only iconic rags but also exquisite marches, waltzes, and cakewalks that have endured through the years. This collection presents Joplin's complete piano works in their original formats, produced in collaboration with the New York Public Library. It features an introduction by Vera Brodsky Lawrence and a historical essay by esteemed ragtime expert Rudi Blesh. The 376-page volume is designed with lay-flat binding, ensuring it remains open on a piano music rack for ease of use.
This outstanding edition of Scott Joplin's renowned rag features the original, unaltered notation alongside additional cue-sized notes that illustrate the embellishments Joplin incorporated during repeats in his piano roll rendition. Additionally, the publication includes historical and biographical insights about both the composer and the piece itself.
