This edition is included in the Trinity syllabus for 2007 at grade 7.
In 1874, an exhibition of watercolors and drawings by the deceased illustrator and architect Viktor A. Hartmann (1834–1873) was organized in his memory. Hartmann's friend, Modest Mussorgsky, visited the exhibition and was inspired to compose the piano suite "Pictures at an Exhibition" - a landmark work in piano literature. Mussorgsky wrote the suite in June 1874 in St. Petersburg, subtitling it "Memories of Viktor Hartmann." The picturesque and evocative musical language, which brings Hartmann's pictures to life, has captivated audiences to this day. The Henle Urtext edition is based on Mussorgsky's neatly written autograph manuscript, with the musical text faithfully reflecting his original notation.
