De Falla: Homenaje (Le Tombeau de Claude Debussy)

Author : Manuel de Falla

Description

In 1920, a magazine in Paris invited several prominent composers to create musical tributes to the renowned French musician Claude Debussy, who passed away in 1918. Among those invited was the distinguished Spanish composer Manuel De Falla (1876-1946), who had been significantly influenced by the French impressionists after meeting Debussy in Paris. His piece, Homenaje (Homage), stands out as his sole composition for solo guitar, although he quickly arranged it for solo piano as well. Despite its brief duration of just three minutes, it is celebrated as one of the masterpieces of early 20th-century music, often described as containing the depth and richness of twenty minutes' worth of music.

Description

The seven years the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla spent in Paris from 1907 to 1914 marked a pivotal shift in his musical style. His exposure to contemporary French Impressionist music had a profound impact, leading him to incorporate those influences into his own compositions, which had previously been grounded in Spanish folk traditions. It was thanks to the guidance of pianist Ricardo Viñes and composer Isaac Albéniz that Falla decided to expand his 1909 "Nocturnes" for solo piano into the three-part symphonic suite "Noches en los jardines de España" ("Nights in the Gardens of Spain") for piano and orchestra, which he completed in 1915. Yuja Wang later provided fingerings for the solo piano part of this enchanting musical evocation of Falla's Andalusian homeland.
