Internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter and guitarist Janis Ian has been a prominent figure in the music industry since the 1960s. She gained early recognition as a teenager with her hit single "Society's Child," which sparked considerable debate. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Ian produced numerous successful tracks, including the Grammy Award-winning "At Seventeen," earning her respect as a talented songwriter whose work has been interpreted by artists like Joan Baez, Mel Torme, and Cher. After a nine-year break from recording, she made a comeback in 1992 with the album Breaking Silence. Her latest release, Folk Is the New Black, came out in 2006, accompanied by a global tour.
