Born in Germany in 1786, Friedrich Kuhlau went to Copenhagen in 1810 to avoid being forced into Napoleon's army, where he quickly established himself as a pianist and composer. These sonatinas are graceful and exquisite in the classic manner.
Kuhlau's Six Sonatinas, Op. 55, serves as an excellent introduction for students preparing to tackle simpler classical sonatas. While some pieces in this collection are well-established in teaching curricula, others offer unique opportunities for both instructors and students, presenting fresh material for study and performance. Additionally, the collection is complemented by a remarkable recording from the Naxos Label, enhancing the learning experience. The sonatinas included are: Sonatina No. 1 in C Major, Op. 55, No. 1; Sonatina No. 2 in G Major, Op. 55, No. 2; Sonatina No. 3 in C Major, Op. 55, No. 3; Sonatina No. 4 in F Major, Op. 55, No. 4; Sonatina No. 5 in D Major, Op. 55, No. 5; and Sonatina No. 6 in C Major, Op. 55, No. 6.
The Three Sonatinas, Op. 20 serve as a suitable follow-up to Clementi's Sonatinas, Op. 36, presenting a slightly greater challenge than the Six Sonatinas, Op. 55. These works effectively prepare students for the study of select Haydn sonatas. While some pieces in this collection are well-established in teaching curricula, others offer unique opportunities for both teachers and students, introducing fresh material for study and performance.
