Granados: Andaluza (Danza espanola No.5)

Author : Enrique Granados

Description

The twelve Danzas españolas composed by this Spanish composer between 1890-95 represent a significant milestone in his early piano works. These pieces follow the tradition of character pieces by composers like Chopin and Schumann, yet they also exhibit a distinct, individual character by drawing from diverse regional dances across Spain. This is especially true of the fifth dance, "Andaluza," which quickly gained popularity thanks to its catchy, somewhat nostalgic melody. Though this piece was only given its evocative title posthumously, it has come to epitomize perceptions of southern Spanish music, even though the composer did not originally conceive of it under that name.

Description

This Spanish composer, Enrique Granados, wrote compositions for every genre, but the piano was undoubtedly his primary focus. His seminal work, the 12 "Danzas españolas" published in four volumes between 1890 and 1895, stands as an important highlight in his early oeuvre. "My inspiration is founded above all in the singing of the people," Granados explained, adding, "Nevertheless, [these dances] are quite original and are no mere transcriptions." Indeed, the "Danzas españolas" set themselves apart from the conventional folkloric pieces of the time, belonging instead to the tradition of the character pieces of Chopin or Schumann. Drawing from rhythms and melodies of dances across Spain, these works possess a truly unique atmospheric quality. For this Urtext edition, all available sources, including Granados's own recordings, were consulted.
