Enrique Granados, a renowned Spanish pianist, teacher, and composer, was a pioneering figure in the modern Spanish piano music tradition. This remarkable collection presents a selection of his most notable short piano pieces, including: A la Cubana (In Cuban Style), Op. 36; Allegro de Concierto; Barcarolla, Op. 45; Capricho Español (Spanish Capriccio); Dos Danzas Españoles (Two Spanish Dances), Op. 37; Three Impromptus; Marche Militaire (Military March), Op. 38; Moresque y Cancion Arabe (Moorish Dance and Arabian Song); Preludio y Ochos Valses Poeticos (Prelude and Eight Poetic Waltzes); Seis Piezas sobre Cantos Populares Españoles (Six Pieces on Spanish Folksongs); and the composer’s own piano arrangement of the renowned Intermezzo from his opera Goyescas. This rich compilation, derived from authoritative editions, is sure to captivate pianists.
This Spanish composer, Enrique Granados, wrote compositions for every genre, but the piano was undoubtedly his primary focus. His seminal work, the 12 "Danzas españolas" published in four volumes between 1890 and 1895, stands as an important highlight in his early oeuvre. "My inspiration is founded above all in the singing of the people," Granados explained, adding, "Nevertheless, [these dances] are quite original and are no mere transcriptions." Indeed, the "Danzas españolas" set themselves apart from the conventional folkloric pieces of the time, belonging instead to the tradition of the character pieces of Chopin or Schumann. Drawing from rhythms and melodies of dances across Spain, these works possess a truly unique atmospheric quality. For this Urtext edition, all available sources, including Granados's own recordings, were consulted.

Enrique Granados left a varied and wide-ranging body of work, but it is his piano music that remains particularly vibrant today. Our new Urtext edition of his dazzlingly virtuosic suite Goyescas – undoubtedly his most famous piano composition – adds a prestigious new work to our catalogue. Composed between 1909 and 1911, the Goyescas suite draws inspiration from the paintings of Spanish artist Francisco de Goya, evoking the gallant, sensual, yet melancholic and dark aspects of 18th century Spanish life. The subtitle "Los majos enamorados" (The Gallant Lovers) provides a thematic thread linking the six scenes depicting the joys and sorrows of budding romance.
