Dmitri Shostakovich's vast body of film and stage music often goes overlooked in contemporary discussions. Among these works, five miniatures have been skillfully arranged for two violins and piano by Lev Atovmian, a close associate of Shostakovich, and are presented as Five Pieces. This collection includes selections from the incidental music for The Human Comedy (1933/34) and the ballet The Limpid Stream (1934/35), as well as scores from the film Hornet (1955) and the now-missing animated feature The Tale of the Priest and his Servant Balda (1933/34).

Shostakovich’s ‘Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Major’, written in the middle of the twentieth century, was intended to be the composer’s last work for the piano. Built upon the foundations of his ‘Concertino for Two Pianos’, the 2nd piano concerto was created with aspiring pianists in consideration. The orchestral support is more limited compared to other contemporary concertos, yet fits the less intense technical environment. Included in this volume are the solo piano section and a piano reduction of the orchestral support.
