EPP-4:- Reinecke: 5 Serenades for the Young Op.183, No.4

Author : Carl Reinecke

Description

Carl Reinecke (1824-1910), a prominent German composer, was heavily influenced by his predecessors, Schumann and Mendelssohn. The beautiful song-like charm and sonorous textures of Reinecke's Serenades demonstrate this debt to both composers.

Reinecke: Flute Sonata, Op. 167 (Undine)

Author : Carl Reinecke

Description

Reinecke's extensive oeuvre contains only a few works that have endured in the concert repertoire from the beginning. Chief among these is the Flute Sonata op. 167, nicknamed "Undine," composed in 1882 and inspired by Friedrich de la Motte-Fouqué's eponymous fairy tale about the ill-fated love of a mermaid. However, the sonata is not intended to be programmatic, but rather, like Schumann's poetic titles, serves as a framework of associations for this highly romantic and at times virtuosic four-movement work in traditional form. With the autograph lost, printed editions form the basis for this sonata's new critical edition, which is firmly established in the flute repertoire and is now available as a Henle Urtext edition.
