The renowned Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera (1916–83) is regarded as one of the leading talents of the twentieth century.
Piano. Ginastera, A
This emotive piano sonata composed in Mallorca and Geneva during the summer of 1982, the year prior to Ginastera’s passing. The University of Michigan commissioned it and dedicated it to Pianist Barbara Nissman, who premiered the piece later that same year. It showcases his distinctive angularity and creative rhythms, with the fast opening tempo establishing the pace for the whole piece, while the rhythmic textures that ensue draw inspiration from American Indian dances and Latin American ceremonial dances.
