This suggests that delving into Berg's Op. 1 piano sonata is essential for understanding his musical style. Indeed, this work is one of the most frequently performed piano compositions from the Second Viennese School.

The genesis of Alban Berg's Violin Concerto in 1935 was shrouded in tragedy. Berg had just begun sketching the work when Manon Gropius, the daughter of his friends Walter Gropius and Alma Mahler, died of polio. Dedicating the concerto "To the memory of an angel" in her honor, Berg did not live to see the work printed or performed, as he passed away later that year.
