Olivier Messiaen, a dedicated composer, organist, and ornithologist, often infused his works with these passions. However, his Thème et Variations for Violin and Piano, created as a wedding gift for his first wife, Claire Delbos, in 1932, marks a departure from this trend. The piece was first performed by the couple in the same year.

Messiaen, who entered the Paris Conservatoire at the young age of eleven, distinguished himself as an exceptional student, earning numerous accolades. Thème et Variations was composed shortly after he became the titular organist at the Sainte Trinité church in Paris and is frequently regarded as emblematic of his renowned Quatour pour la fin du temps. The composition consists of a theme followed by five variations, starting with a straightforward theme before progressing into intricate variations. The theme is presented in common time and at a moderate pace, while each variation introduces changes in dynamics, time signature, tempo, tonality, and rhythm, yet Messiaen skillfully maintains echoes of the original theme throughout.
