Description
Schumann's Dichterliebe song cycle, inspired by the poetry of Heine, poignantly captures the emotional highs and lows of love's disappointments. The pieces range from hopeful anticipation ("Im wunderschönen Monat Mai") to solitary grief ("Und wüssten's die Blumen, die kleinen") and bitter sarcasm ("Die alten bösen Lieder"). Schumann drew directly from his own tumultuous romance with Clara Wieck, which faced years of struggle before culminating in their marriage. The Henle Urtext edition, expertly edited by Schumann specialist Kazuko Ozawa, is now available in adaptations for medium and low voices, with pianist Gerold Huber's acclaimed accompaniment.
