Description

ne of the key roles that Bach undertook during his tenure in Leipzig was his leadership of the local collegium musicum from 1729 to 1741. This organization was a voluntary assembly of professional musicians and university students who held regular public concerts on a weekly basis. For these well-attended events, Bach composed the six concertos featured in this collection. These works are historically significant as they represent some of the earliest keyboard concertos ever created, and they remain subjects of study and performance due to their exceptional and vibrant musical characteristics.

Several of these concertos draw inspiration from earlier compositions by Bach for different instrumental arrangements. Notably, the Concerto for Four Harpsichords was adapted from Vivaldi's four-violin concerto, Op. 3, No. 10. All six pieces, presented here in a single volume from the esteemed Breitkopf & Härtel edition, showcase the remarkable musical brilliance that Johann Sebastian Bach infused into his keyboard and orchestral works.
