Johann Sebastian Bach's three significant cycles of suites are integral to the core repertoire of piano literature: the Partitas, along with the so-called English and French Suites. Among these, the French Suites have historically enjoyed the greatest popularity, a trend that was evident even during Bach's lifetime. However, this widespread appeal presents challenges for editors tasked with producing an Urtext edition, as numerous copies were created by Bach's students, each containing various presumably authentic variations. In this updated Henle Urtext edition, Ullrich Scheideler elucidates the complex source situation with remarkable clarity. He provides footnotes detailing minor source variations, while major discrepancies are addressed by printing both versions of individual movements in their entirety.
