Description

Jean Marie Leclair the elder (1697-1764) was born in Lyon and studied in Turin under J.B. Somis, a student of Corelli. He settled permanently in Paris in 1728 and served as a violinist for the Royal Chapel until 1736. Recognized as one of the foremost classical violin masters, Leclair is regarded as the leading French composer for the violin. This edition features two sonatas from his fourth book, op. 9, specifically no. 3 in D major and no. 5 in A minor. The source material is derived from a copy of the first edition published in Paris in 1738, held at the New York Public Library. The piano score in this edition faithfully reproduces the violin part and the figured bass as presented in the original. Instrumentation includes violin and basso continuo for op. 9/3.
