Description

Beethoven assigned the distinctive title “Sonata quasi una Fantasia” to this sonata, a designation it shares with the more renowned “Moonlight” Sonata, along with its opus number. Both of these sonatas, in addition to the earlier sonata featuring a funeral march, Op. 26, and the subsequent three sonatas, Op. 31, mark Beethoven's exploration of innovative musical landscapes within this genre. The intricate structure of Op. 27 No. 1, which fluctuates between the forms of fantasia and sonata, has historically posed significant interpretive challenges for pianists. However, once these challenges are surmounted, the piece reveals itself as a true masterpiece. G. Henle Publishers has now released a new edition of this sonata, featuring established fingering and interpretive insights provided by Murray Perahia, and edited by the esteemed team of Beethoven specialists, Gertsch and Perahia.
