Say: Black Earth (Kara Toprak)

RM 86.90

Description

Black Earth draws its inspiration from Kara Toprak, a well-known Turkish song composed by Aşık Veysel (1891-1973), who stands as one of the last significant Turkish balladeers and a vital link in a millennium-old tradition. Veysel lost his sight in childhood due to smallpox, which led him to explore the Saz, a traditional Turkish lute, and delve into poetry for personal enjoyment. His interactions with various folk poets and his subsequent travels across villages after 1928 allowed him to share his music widely, ultimately establishing him as a cultural icon of the Turkish Republic. In Kara Toprak, Veysel poignantly expresses themes of solitude and loss, with the Black Earth symbolizing the landscape of his hometown, Sivas. Fazıl Say captures the essence of the Saz in the muted tones of the Introduction and Epilogue of Black Earth, reflecting on the ballad's themes. The central sections, however, intertwine elements of folklore, Romantic piano, and jazz, culminating in a powerful musical expression. Say showcases this work in both classical music concerts and jazz festivals, particularly embracing the improvisational spirit inherent in both folk and jazz traditions during the folkloristic segments.
