The materials for the Concert Band and the accompanying workbook are designed to familiarize students with fundamental arranging techniques specific to concert bands. Arranging can be categorized into two distinct processes. The first involves scoring and transcribing, where scoring focuses on elements such as voicing, doubling, balance, and color, as well as the actual notation of music on score paper. Transcribing refers to adapting music originally composed for one type of instrument or ensemble, like a piano or orchestra, for a different group. This text addresses these aspects. The second aspect of arranging encompasses the more imaginative elements, including the creation of introductions, modulations, endings, and background figures.
