Matthisson himself remarked that while several composers have infused this lyrical fantasy with music, none have, in his view, overshadowed the text with melody as profoundly as Ludwig van Beethoven did in Vienna. When creating this work, Beethoven envisioned a high voice, but to expand accessibility for performers, Henle now offers a practical Urtext edition that includes transpositions for medium and low voices.
