Our sense of musical metre tells us whether a waltz is "in three" or a blues tune is "in four with a shuffle". Hearing in Time investigates the metric component of our musical experience from a psychological standpoint. There are several fundamental perceptual and cognitive restrictions that affect musical metre. These restrictions form the basis of Hearing in Time's account of musical metre. Hearing in Time also considers the fact that we spend a lot of time listening to music, as well as doing other rhythmic activities. It also considers metre in the context of actual musical performance, including nuances of time and dynamics, rather than as a theoretical idealisation.
