Description

Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) was a distinctive figure in the early 20th-century music landscape. His experiences of persecution and exclusion by the National Socialists resulted in a period of obscurity, but in recent years, the remarkable quality of his compositions has been rediscovered. Influenced by jazz, Dadaism, atonal music, and socialist realism, Schulhoff's 1930 work, Hot-Sonata, prominently features the saxophone as a solo instrument, showcasing vibrant rhythms, dazzling harmonies, and techniques like glissandi. This edition of the Hot-Sonata is published for the first time in an Urtext format, correcting numerous errors present in earlier editions. It draws from a comprehensive range of sources, including the original manuscript, an engraver's copy, Schulhoff's own published work, and various personal documents such as letters and contracts. The volume has been edited by Frank Lunte, a renowned saxophonist from Berlin with expertise in this repertoire and the saxophone's history, particularly in 1930s Berlin.
