Description

In 1928, Schönberg's publisher Emil Hertzka prompted the composer to create the Piano Piece op. 33a. Hertzka had merely requested permission to reprint an earlier work in the collection "Music of the Time." However, Schönberg chose instead to compose a new piece for the 1929 Universal Edition volume. This work, as well as the Piano Piece op. 33b written two years later, showcased Schönberg's refined use of twelve-tone technique while drawing inspiration from classical-romantic traditions in its formal structure. These two lesser-known mature works captivate with their colorful piano sound and organic dramatic flow, hinting at a classical sensibility. Henle's precise music engraving and Schönberg expert Shai Wosner's helpful fingerings make this unknown side of the composer perfectly accessible.
