Description
BWV 870-893-48 The Well-Tempered Clavier II Fugues and Preludes.
Piano and Harpsichord.
Given that the tuning used up top then dispersed pure and "impure" intervals irregularly throughout the keys, Johann Sebastian Bach's concept of writing a collection of preludes and fugues in all major and minor keys was novel and revolutionary in the second decade of the 18th century. As a result, one could perform extremely well in some keys but completely poorly in others. In his Das Wohltemperirte Clavier (The Well-Tempered Clavier), Bach became the first composer to master all of tonality, thereby delivering a masterpiece of keyboard literature to the musical world.
Beethoven's sonatas represent the New Testament, while the "Well-Tempered Clavier" represents the Old Testament. We have to have faith in both. Bülow, Hans
