Description
The works in this volume illustrate the development of keyboard instruments. The early pieces were composed for harpsichord, with two featuring the "Viennese bass octave" - an innovation that allowed musicians to play chords wider than a hand span with a single hand. Our edition includes footnotes suggesting how to navigate these passages. The later works were inspired by the pianoforte. Haydn also adapted his own compositions for piano, as seen in the "Largo assai" from the "Reiterquartett". This completely revised and extended Urtext edition includes fingerings provided by Christine Schornsheim, a specialist in historical performance practice.
