Description

At the height of his career, Puccini was inspired to compose Madama Butterfly, having already achieved acclaim with three significant operatic works: Manon Lescaut, La Bohème, and Tosca. His creative spark was ignited by a London staging of David Belasco's American play, Madam Butterfly, which presented a poignant narrative that resonated with Puccini's artistic sensibilities, particularly the compelling theatrical scenario featuring a heroine in peril.

In collaboration with librettists Illica and Giacosa, Puccini commenced the development of Madama Butterfly in 1902. The opera premiered at La Scala in Milan in 1904; however, it was not until the subsequent year that its promising future became evident. A production at Covent Garden, showcasing two of the era's most celebrated performers—Emmy Destinn as Butterfly and Enrico Caruso as Pinkerton—captivated London audiences. The following year, its successful run at the Metropolitan Opera in New York solidified Madama Butterfly's status as a beloved staple of the operatic canon.

This meticulously crafted full-score edition of Madama Butterfly is reproduced from the authoritative version initially published by G. Ricordi in Milan. It provides students and opera enthusiasts with the opportunity to explore in depth a masterpiece renowned for its melodic depth and exquisite orchestration.
