Description
Dvořák's publisher Simrock had pushed him for years to compose a follow-up to his first piano quartet. In the summer of 1889, Dvořák delivered on Simrock's request with the opus 87 piano quartet, a challenging and mature work that combined mastery of form with memorable themes and surprising harmonies, quickly winning over performers and audiences alike.
This critical edition by Henle draws upon the first edition, the autograph, and the engraver's copy as primary sources, continuing the Urtext series of Dvořák's works.
