George Benjamin composed Sortileges specifically for Paul Crossley, commissioned by Northern Arts with financial support from the Arts Council of Great Britain. Andrew Porter of The New Yorker described the work as '...fresh, beautifully constructed, harmonically bewitching, and sensitively written for the instrument.'
