Description

Schumann frequently returned to the variation form, often writing his own variations that contrasted with the popular operatic themes that piano virtuosos of the time were widely producing. His "Impromptus" were composed with the intent that they "should be seen to be variations of a new form," and he even skillfully combined two themes. While Franz Liszt had praised the work, Schumann later made extensive revisions to his Opus 5. This edition presents the "Impromptus" in both versions for the first time, accompanied by informative commentary.
