Description

Petrarch, a co-founder of humanism and one of Italy's greatest poets, left behind hundreds of sonnets in his collection "Canzoniere." In these sonnets, he expressed his adoration for the mysterious figure of Laura, though it is uncertain whether she truly existed.

Over five centuries later, the composer Franz Liszt set three of Petrarch's sonnets - numbers 47, 104, and 123 - to music, crafting lyrical and poetic songs for piano. Liszt included these piano versions in the second volume ("Italy") of his "Années de Pèlerinage" (HN 174) series. Of the three, Petrarch's Sonnet No. 104 remains particularly popular.
